This is a botanical drawing of the various germination stages from John Evelyn's 1664 masterwork Sylva: A Discourse of Forest Trees one of the earliest published text on forestry. It was one of several tomes President John Quincy Adams would have consulted on botany, forestry, gardening. Adams would apply this knowledge to the White House Grounds.
